...Mediaeval Banquets during the winter.  Neither of them were on speaking terms other than by rude notes pushed under each others doors, and this is how our friend's car got trashed one night! My boyfriend Kev (now my husband) had agreed to sell a friend's car which he had collected and driven up to the Hall and parked on the drive.  The day after this my mum pushed a note under my dad’s lounge door telling him to move the car at once.  My dad as usual ignored the note from my mum, saying we had every right to park on the drive as much as her!  So we left the car where it was. Oh dear, that was a bad move.  The next day found us staring in disbelief at ou...

...COMING OF AGE:  My year at college had come to an end and I was now a fully fledged secretary.  Now to find a job!  It didn’t take too long as there was plenty of employment around in those days and I was soon offered a position with a small engineering firm in Burton.  As I didn’t drive there was still the problem of me getting to work and dad managed to talk the residents of the apartments into taking me, as they were going to Burton every day as well, and it would save him coming out twice a day!  Kev and the band were getting a few gigs around the area and after singing with them for a little while I gave it up and let a more professional singer ta...

...Mediaeval Banquets sponsored a car there.  We both dressed up in our mediaeval costumes and became ‘Grid Girls’ for the day, which was also a lot of fun when you’re 16 and the world’s media is focused on the race track that you’re standing on!   Don’t miss next week’s instalment:  See you in Court If this is your first visit to my blog site and you would like to read from the beginning of the story: Please Click Here!...

New Year jinks! #11

Posted by Viv Wilson on 30th December 2018 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Scottish,Lichfield, new year's eve
...NEW YEAR JINKS!       The New Year’s Eve Balls at the Hall were usually the highlight of the year.  After twelve months of hard work, especially running the Mediaeval Banquets twice a week throughout the winter, we were always ready to see out the year in style with a big new year party.  In those days it was always black tie for the men and long dresses for the ladies – usually around 500 people bought tickets for an evening of entertainment with a dance band, disco and a meal.  At midnight a man dressed in traditional Scottish regalia, including a kilt and sporran, would pipe in the new year with his bagpipes.  Down the Long Gallery he would slowly...

...MIDNIGHT POOL PARTIES:      After leaving school I spent a year at Burton-on-Trent Technical College studying to be a secretary but my year at college had come to an end - now to find a job!  It didn’t take too long as there was plenty of employment around in those days and I was soon offered a position with a small engineering firm in Burton.  As I didn’t drive there was still the problem of me getting to work and dad managed to talk the residents of the apartments into taking me, as they were going to Burton every day as well, and it would save him coming out twice a day (no doubt he was thinking about the petrol he would save too!) Kev and the band...

See You In Court! #28

Posted by Viv Wilson on 30th July 1979 in Early Days | hoar cross hall, money, business, divorce, antiques, court, barrister, solicitor, banquet, judge,Caernarfon, boat
...SEE YOU IN COURT - The saga of my parents’ split continued as we grew up in our stately home, although their behaviour was anything but stately for most of the time!  Seven years of arguing and fighting were about to come to an end and the solicitors had finally agreed on a date to go to court.  We carried on helping my dad to run the Hall and he still went to his boat in Caernarfon at weekends to get away from the house but we were all getting weary of it now.  We were young adults and wanting to get on with our own lives.  After five years together we were hoping to get married at some point so we were glad that it was finally going to be sorted out one...
