...st in the story did nothing for my dad’s sanity and my mum was still hoping to have him committed and kept making appointments for him with the psychiatrist.  Once again, the Police were called every week informing them of the threats on the singer’s life and they eventually took my dad’s gun licence off him just in case anything did happen! We tried to keep out of the way as much as possible and stayed in Burton all week, where we worked, and came home at weekends where we would meet up with our friends and party in the apartments out of sight and sound of my parents.  One morning we came home at 8am after being out all night and met my dad on the stai...

Here Comes the Bride (Part 1) #29

...de of the story to him and told him of my dad’s terrible temper and how he might start an argument in the church. He then told us something that stunned us – he told us that vicars have the power of arrest in their church if anyone causes a disturbance; this is apparently from some ancient law. I wonder how many people know that? I think we just left it then and hoped that the solicitor’s letter would be enough. I did hear many years later on the grapevine that mum had crept in at the back of the church for a quick look before the ceremony ended – I hope she did.     But first we had to have our stag and hen dos. In those days it was always the n...

Things that go bump in the night #3

...maid. The story goes that she had left her post to meet up with the footman and while she was gone the child had had a fit and died. We found her grave in the local churchyard – I think she was about 8 years old. All very sad but it didn’t stop me being absolutely terrified every time I went to bed. Climbing the huge staircase at night on my own, often using a torch to save leaving the lights on, was no fun! Walking along the bedroom corridor knowing there were all those dark empty rooms nearby, well, your imagination runs wild I can tell you! My brothers and I had turned one of the attic rooms into a ‘den’ for us to hang out in. We found an old table a...

Race Day Parties #25

...y similar story to the Donington Park one actually! The official opening was in 1956 with Bob Gerrard being in the first race. My dad would have been there racing his car too throughout the 1950s alongside great names such as Graham Hill and Jim Clarke. So it seemed appropriate that his ex-driver should buy the track that he used to race around! Chris decided to hold a party there when he re-opened it and so we all went along to celebrate. It was similar to the Donington party with lots of different races and marquees full of free food and drink! They went on all day and my friend Janine came along to join in the fun. We went into one of the marquee parties and...
