...u?” “Alice,” the child answered. “I’ve come from the west wing.” “Oh, you must be the new tenants,” Viv said, wondering how she had found her way up to the attic. “Do your parents know you’re here?” The child stared back but didn’t answer. Viv tried again. “Are you going to a party? That’s a very pretty dress you have on.” Alice shook her head and moved into the room. “Can I do some drawing please,” she asked. Viv pushed some paper and pens towards her and Alice sat at the table drawing a picture of a house. She was very quiet so Viv let her get on with it while she typed. A little while later she decided to go downstair...

...Here is another ghost story for the Christmas season associated with Hoar Cross Hall. By an amazing co-incidence Lewis Carroll and Emily Meynell (who built the Hall) became acquainted when she was a child. This is their story - In 1865 Lewis Carroll wrote another story about Alice following on from ‘Alice in Wonderland’. It was called ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’. In this story Alice climbs onto the mantlepiece over the fireplace in her lounge and finds that she can climb through the mirror into another world which is reversed, just like a reflection. Once again, she encounters strange figures in a world dominated by a chess set and nursery rhyme c...

In the 1850s Charles Dodgson (Carroll’s real name) studied...

...ho wrote 'Alice in Wonderland' among other stories.  The mirror over the fireplace inspired his story about 'Alice through the looking glass'.  When Emily got married in 1863 she took this mirror with her to her new home, Hoar Cross Hall, and for many decades it hung over the fireplace in the Library until the Meynells left in the 1950s.  However, the present owner tracked the mirror down and it is now back in the Library on the mantlepiece again where Emily herself used to look at it!  (I go into more detail about this story in my blog 'Alice - the ghost in the mirror' which can be found on my website).  Emily Meynell Ingram   Talking about gho...
