They may have visited during one of their tours of the Midlands and it may have only been for afternoon tea as we're not sure due to insufficient records, but we do know that the Meynell family provided hospitality for the Princess Royal, probably in the 1920s and for whom a special bathroom containing a marble-enclosed bath was installed on the first floor of the house. The daughters of aristocratic families were often attracted to fine, upstanding footmen, as they were always in the house and therefore, nearby. The butler would often have to keep an eye on the footmen as mixing with the family was unheard of. However, the girls would find ways of being in the same place as these young men, especially if they went out on a carriage ride as the footmen would stand at the back of the carriage and – oh my! – perhaps even take their hands to help them down the steps when they got home. I can hear all the giggling even now!...

The main residence for the Royal family is Buckingham Palace which is the administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United Kingdom and where many state occasions take place, but Buckingham Palace was originally known as Buckingham House. The building at the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site that had been in private ownership for at least 150 years.
