...ntally my Godfather was Pat Ferguson, who drove for Lotus and came 10th in the 1963 Le Mans 24-hour race but who was also known for attempting to escape from Colditz Castle (the infamous German prisoner-of-war camp) during World War 2. He’d already escaped three times from the Nazis which is why they sent him to Colditz, a place supposedly escape-proof. He quickly became popular with the inmates when he built a 'still' and made illegal alcohol!  However, numerous escape attempts were made including one of the most daring of all time, which my Godfather was a key part of. They actually built a glider in the attic of Colditz Castle which they planned to escape...

...RACE TRACK ‘AFTER PARTIES’ Because my dad used to be a racing driver he was often invited to parties and open days at various racing circuits.  He naturally knew lots of racing people and on this particular occasion he was invited to an Open Day at Donington Park.  Tom Wheatcroft, a local entrepreneur, had bought Donington Park in the 1970s as he owned the largest collection of Grand Prix cars in the world at that time.  In 1973 he opened a museum there to house them all and called it the Donington Grand Prix Exhibition.   Donington became the favoured home of the British round of the MotoGP motorcycling championships but he was really hoping to bring F...
