With the Coronation of King Charles III almost upon us, this week's blog focuses on the Palace that he now calls home – or the 'Headquarters' of the Royal Family.
This residence is BucKingham Palace which is the administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United Kingdom and where many state occasions take place, but BucKingham Palace was originally known as BucKingham House. In this week's blog I am focusing on the royal family again and the stately homes which they grew up in.

... In 1470 King Edward IV actually visited the abbey while chasing his enemy, the Earl of Warwick, during the Wars of the Roses. Of course, it had to shut down in the 1500s when Henry VIII came along!
In 1603 King James I sent his daughter, Princess Elizabeth, to live there and be educated, when it was bought by a John Harington but by 1622 the Craven family had acquired the Abbey, and it stayed with them for another 300 years. Sounds like there’s been a few royal connections to this Grade I listed building! ...seen by a King and his court. Well they seemed so struck on this that they decided to have a go themselves. In the seventies mediaeval banquets were becoming the ‘in thing’ so they started planning how they would do this. It was decided that they would run them during the winter months and open the house to the public from Easter to the August Bank Holiday.

Around this time J C Bamford, who had a factory in nearby Uttoxeter, heard that we were planning to run banquets and booked a private one exclusively for their US division. My parents knew Joe Bamford (the JCB owner) quite well and I think my dad hoped that...

...LET THE BANQUETS COMMENCE!: It was the end of the summer season and rehearsals had started for the new venture of Mediaeval Banquets. All the cast would come round to the house each week and my mum and one or two other ladies were busy maKing the skirts and blouses for the wenches, although the main costumes were bought. My mum also made about 200 bibs which the guests were going to be wearing as eating five courses with a dagger can be quite messy! We had a King, a Jester, a Fire-eater, a Halberdier, an organist and various wenches and serving ladies.
