Going to sleep in a big old house is quite scary when you’re young but going to sleep in a big old house that’s haunted is even more scary!!  As we approach Hallowe'en my mind has gone back to that first winter at Hoar Cross Hall and all the scary things that happened - and that was without any trick or treaters in those days!  We quickly realised that we weren’t the only inhabitants of the house.  Every time there was a windy night I could hear a window banging in the attic – all night long it kept me awake.  The next day I would go upstairs to the attics to close it but there would be no windows open or even loose.   They were all tightly shut as...

...round the attics to see what (or who!) was causing it. They had heard lots of people chattering and thought there was a party going on somewhere but everywhere was in darkness. Then, as they made their way back to their room a woman in a long skirt brushed past them – they didn't see her, just felt the 'swish' of her skirt and the chill of the air! We stood listening to them with shivers going down our back – it seemed our plan had worked better than we could ever have imagined!   A dress similar to the one heard in the attic!   Every now and then Mrs Meynell (who had sold us the house) would come around to see us and regale us with stories about t...

...e haunted attics   After about 30 minutes we ventured up the spiral staircase a little way to see what was happening. As we couldn’t hear anything we went a little further and peeked around the corner and looked down the long corridor which ran the length of the attic. By now we were all full of ‘dutch courage’ making us brave! We could see the candlelight glowing from one of the rooms and heard a bit of movement when suddenly there was a loud bang and a door slammed shut!  Suddenly a colony of bats flew down the corridor towards us!  It was like something out of a horror film!   We all ran like crazy back down the stairs and not long afterwards o...

...oured the attics with them and they took a few more pictures, then down to the basement which always looked so gloomy and dark as it was mainly underground. It usually got us a few extra visitors on a Sunday afternoon, keen to see where it all happened! Amazingly I was mad keen on horror stories and would often read them before going to sleep – no wonder I was so scared to move around the house once it was dark. My room was next to my brothers’ room and we had an adjoining door because their room was a bedroom and my smaller room would have been the dressing room in the Victorian days so there was always a connecting door between rooms. I was often glad of...
