...ck up the pub (this was quite common in those days). As the night went on we got hungry and the chef decided to cook some chips for us all. He went into the kitchen and saw that the chimney was on fire! We all ran out of the pub and sure enough, there were flames pouring out of the top. As the landlord only lived in the village the chef phoned him up and told him about the fire but he wouldn’t believe him! He thought we were playing a joke on him and slammed the phone down. Once more the chef rang him and told him that the pub was on fire – he must come straight away, but once again he wouldn’t believe us and hung up. Meanwhile we rang the fire brigade and...

...se to the public.  As well as a bad atmosphere between my parents there was also a bad atmosphere between me and my mum and mum and Kev, so we were all trying to avoid each other!  My mum had taken over the West Wing apartment when the tenants left, leaving my dad with one less rental income.  She was also putting Yale locks on all the rooms that she used in the house as well as any storage rooms used for the banquets.  This infuriated my dad who obviously didn’t have access to them once the locks went on.  One of these rooms was the cupboard off the Entrance Hall which held the meter boxes, so we now had no access to the electrics if anything went wrong...
