My Dad Bought A Mansion! #1

...as also a West Wing and an East Wing to the house; the West Wing had been the nursery rooms for the younger members of the Meynell family and their nursemaids.  In one of the corridors we found an old ‘sit and ride’ toy, which was a horse on wheels with pedals; this must have belonged to the Meynell children and had been sadly left behind.  However, we had a lot of fun on it and my mum kept it when she left so her grand-children could have fun on it too!  So it had plenty of use! Also in the nursery Wing was a huge snooker table complete with balls and cues.  My dad decided to sell this as we didn’t need it but what a job it was carrying it down corri...

...as also a West Wing and an East Wing to the house; the East Wing had been the nursery rooms for the younger members of the Meynell family and their nursemaids.  Back down in the basement were all the old kitchens including the Boot Boy’s room, laundry room, pantries and sculleries.  Along the wall of the passageway was a row of bells and the names of the rooms to which they belonged – these were here so that the servants could be summoned to do their master’s bidding – they were also used in a prank by myself and my brother when we were visited by a team of professional ghost hunters - but that’s another story which will be featured in a later blog!...

...Going to sleep in a big old house is quite scary when you’re young but going to sleep in a big old house that’s haunted is even more scary!!  As we approach Hallowe'en my mind has gone back to that first winter at Hoar Cross Hall and all the scary things that happened - and that was without any trick or treaters in those days!  We quickly realised that we weren’t the only inhabitants of the house.  Every time there was a windy night I could hear a window banging in the attic – all night long it kept me awake.  The next day I would go upstairs to the attics to close it but there would be no windows open or even loose.   They were all tightly shut as...

...es in the West Wing apartment where we had got to know the latest residents there.  A large crowd of people would meet up at the Meynell, the local pub in the village,  and then we would all troop up to the Hall at closing time and sneak into the West Wing via the basement door, which was the way in for the people who lived in the apartments.  Up the spiral staircase we would all go and eventually we got to our destination, trying to beat the time switches which kept the lights on until we got there.  We were always terrified that the lights would ‘time out’ before we got to the next one along the basement passageway and everyone would be making ghostly...
