The haunting of Hoar Cross Hall #15

...utler who haunted the Entrance Hall.  So many stories!  Viv sat listening in amazement, enraptured. “Did you find out who the little girl was?” she eventually asked. “Oh yes,” answered Mrs Meynell.  “She lived here during the Victorian days and had been left alone in the west wing nursery one evening after she’d been put to bed.  Her nursemaid had popped down to the kitchens to get a snack and while she was gone, poor little Alice had a fit and sadly died.” They all looked suitably sympathetic and started to talk of other, more pleasurable things except for Viv who sat there open mouthed. “Are you all right, dear?" asked Mrs Meynell. "Ye...

...  The haunted attic corridor   A few days later Viv and Gavin were rummaging through the dressing up box trying to find Christmas outfits – they wanted to dress their little brother Piers up in Victorian clothes. Their mother was helping them and they had a lot of fun pretending to be different characters. That evening there was a knock on the lounge door upstairs and their mother, Gwynyth, opened it to see a small child standing there. “Is that you Piers?” she asked in astonishment. She thought the children had dressed him up again for a joke. “Get back to bed, it’s really late!” The child ran down the bedroom corridor and Gwynyth followe...

...d and the haunted attic! The Americans would hang on my every word! The JCB tankards   During that summer my parents auditioned for a King, a jester, entertainers and singers and by August they had a team of ‘am-dram’ actors ready to start rehearsals. They also advertised for wenches and serving girls of which I became one – at 14 years old this became my new weekend job! But the banquets were about to change all our lives - for better and for worse.   Don’t miss next week’s instalment: 'Mediaeval Mayhem!'   If you would like to follow my story from the beginning, click here and please feel free to share with your friends.   If you wo...

...ynell who haunted the house   Because we lived at the Hall the vicar expected to see us at church every week; however, weekends were our busy time so we didn’t go every week but managed to attend at Easter and Christmas. I have to say we were non too keen on going to church as we had to be on our best behaviour (something which didn’t sit easily with us as you’ve probably guessed!). Afterwards though we all went across the road to the vicarage for tea and biscuits. There was always plenty of other food too so we were happy to go on special occasions. However, the people that attended the church were all incredibly old (or so it seemed to us) and very...

...  The haunted staircase   One evening my parents decided to go on a rare evening out to see Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen who were playing locally. I had been left in charge of my brothers and once they were in bed I went back down to the lounge to watch whatever I wanted on TV with a huge plate of snacks! In those days the Hammer Dracula films were all the rage and were regularly shown on weekend TV – this particular weekend they were showing ‘The satanic rites of Dracula’, a real spine tingler. Because of my love of horror stories I decided to watch it. These films were always set in an old Gothic mansion on the moors or somewhere remote where you...
