One of the great things about living in a stately home is that you can have a wild party with the loudest of music – andSpan> no-one will hear it! I was now going out with Kev, whom I had met at college. Mum was a bit disappointed that my sensible boyfriend andSpan> I had parted company after 18 months of an on/off relationship but she accepted Kev into the fold andSpan> eventually met all the other members of the bandSpan>. I think she wanted to put her mind at rest that they were a bunch of nice lads andSpan> not a drug crazed rock bandSpan> eating bats! Which of course they were! No – I’m only kidding! After the awful split up at Christmas my parents were now living at each end of t...

With the new Downton Abbey film out this month I thought I would do a comparison of the two family homes, Downton andSpan> Hoar Cross Hall, the latter being my old family home for those of you who are new to these blogs. Although Downton Abbey is fictional, the house on which it is based is not, it being Highclere Castle in Hampshire which was built in 1679 andSpan> is owned by the Earl of Carnarvon. Hoar Cross Hall was the original home of the Meynell Ingram family who first came from Leicestershire andSpan> was built in 1863. Hugo Meynell of Quorndon was the High Sheriff of Staffordshire andSpan> Member of Parliament for Lichfield andSpan> the family owned considerable property in...

Here Comes the Bride (Part 2) #33

HERE COMES THE BRIDE (Part 2): andSpan> so our wedding day at Hoar Cross Hall arrived bright andSpan> clear, all thoughts of solicitors, legals, fights andSpan> arrests behind us! Myself andSpan> my bridesmaids went to get our hair done in the morning andSpan> Kev slapped a piece of steak on his jaw to bring the swelling down after the rather unfortunate fight at his stag do. Fortunately, the bruise didn’t show up too much on the photos! Gavin drove my dad’s Mercedes Benz car all the way down the drive andSpan> back up the road to the church – this was one of the drawbacks of having a church in the grounds; you don’t get to drive all through the town with everyone looking at you...

The Church of the Holy Angels #55

Many stately homes had churches built near them or even a chapel inside them, as was done at Hoar Cross Hall. However, the church that was built in the grounds of the Hall became known as 'The Cathedral of the MidlandSpan>s' due to its magnificent structure andSpan> is generally regarded as one of the finest Victorian churches in the country. It resembles a cathedral in miniature, being more like an English minster than a humble village church. When Emily Meynell Ingram's husbandSpan>, Hugo died in 1871 from a hunting accident, she wanted to keep his memory alive. They had only been married for eight years andSpan> she had no children to comfort her andSpan> so in 1872 she commissioned...
