Posted by Viv Wilson on 5th August 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell,william the conqueror,christian community,BIshop of Portsmouth,Red Cross,second world war,first world war,George VI,Queen Mother,Queen Elizabeth
...If you love to read up on the history of old houses then you'll love to hear about all the generations of people that lived at Hoar Cross Hall.  Hoar Cross was part of Needwood Forest, the 11th century lands of Henry de Ferrers. The land was passed down to Henry’s son and subsequent various people over the course of 500 years ending with the Webb family, around the 1730s, who bought the land and house known as the Manor of the Cross. This was quite a large house built on a hill near Yoxall (which is the village next to Hoar Cross). In 1740 the manor house was demolished and later the Hon. Charles Talbot bought the estate for £17,000. Eventually it was sold t...

...Why are stately homes so called? Stately home actually means 'a large impressive old house with interesting history and usually visited by the public.' Well, I suppose they do look very 'stately' for a start but these houses were also a status symbol for the great families of England, who competed with each other to provide hospitality for the royal household who would travel around England meeting their subjects. Stately homes were huge mansions which were always beautiful and the epitome of perfect architecture, often designed by famous architects of the day. The gardens too would be perfectly landscaped to show balance, variety, sequence and colour. One of t...

...m and the history behind them as much as I did! As we lead up to the Coronation I will be doing weekly blogs complete with a number of photos from the album showing members of the Royal Family around the turn of the 20th century, along with a bit of history about each photo.    Royal Heirs This photo is probably taken around 1905 on board the 'Victoria and Albert' yacht as the royal family did a lot of their travelling on this. It shows Queen Alexandra's husband, King Edward VII with their son George (later George V) and his two eldest sons, David and Albert (later to become King Edward VIII who abdicated and King George VI, the Queen's father). They are...

...As summer turns to autumn my thoughts have gone back in time to 1970 when my family moved house at this time of the year - not to any old house, but to a 70-roomed stately home in Staffordshire!  The whole process of moving  was done over the summer months as we lived about 20 miles away in an old vicarage with a large garden and lots of outbuildings. This house was about 200 years old and they say Bonnie Prince Charlie marched past it on his way to battle back in the day, for all you history buffs out there!  Actually I love history and I think my interest was fuelled by living in these historic houses as a child.  My dad used to be a racing driver in the 1...
