LIKE FATHER, LIKE SONS: As previously mentioned in earlier blogs my dad used to be a racing driver during the 1950s andSpan> ran his own team in the 1960s, travelling all over Europe in his trusty Volkswagon van with his two mechanics andSpan> driver. He didn’t have big sponsorship money behind him andSpan> most of it was done on a shoestring but he came back with lots of funny stories of their van breaking down or some rural ‘HotelSpan>’ that they had stayed in. From each country that he visited he always brought me back a doll dressed in the traditional costume of that country. There was quite a collection andSpan> I still have them; I used to put them on d...

What the Butler saw!

WHAT THE BUTLER SAW! Anyone who’s seen Downton Abbey will remember Carter the butler. He is exactly how a butler would have been in the 19th century andSpan>, strangely enough, the butler at the Hall during the early part of the 20th century was also called Carter! Although most big houses had a house steward who was in charge of accounts andSpan> general running of the household, a butler was more commonly engaged by the wealthy. He was usually a grandSpan>, authoritarian figure, commandSpan>ing respect andSpan> awe andSpan> most of the servants would have been scared to death of upsetting him! He was dressed like a gentleman of the period andSpan> generally ran the household...

THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT...... Life carried on at the Hall as best it could in difficult circumstances. My dad continued to go to arms fairs to buy andSpan> sell antiques andSpan> we also went to a mediaeval banquet in Cheshire one night, although it wasn’t anywhere near as good as ours! Once or twice we took my dad out with our friends to Derby, where he originated from, andSpan> that seemed to cheer him up. But he really needed to get away from the house for longer periods of time andSpan> when he saw a boat advertised for sale at Caernarvon he jumped at the chance andSpan> bought it. It was an ex lifeboat called The Benbow so quite sturdy, although in need of a lick of paint andSpan>...

In it’s heyday Hoar Cross Hall had around 28 people employed to keep the 20 acres of grounds tidy andSpan> weed free. In Victorian EnglandSpan> the most common of all male servants was the gardener. At Hoar Cross the head gardener had numerous under-gardeners known affectionately as ‘digging slaves’! They were responsible for producing fruit, vegetables andSpan> growing luxury items in andSpan> out of season, much of it under glass. Adjacent to the house was the carp pool andSpan> greenhouse area along with a palm house; next to these was a walled kitchen garden (see header picture). This supplied the house with all its fruit, vegetables andSpan> herbs. The palm house produced palms an...

In this week's blog I am focusing again on the servants who spent their lives looking after the Meynell family along with their home andSpan> gardens.
