What the butler saw!

WHAT THE BUTLER SAW! Anyone who’s seen Downton Abbey will remember Carter the butler. He is exactly how a butler would have been in the 19th century andSpan>, strangely enough, the butler at the Hall during the early part of the 20th century was also called Carter! Although most big houses had a house steward who was in charge of accounts andSpan> general running of the household, a butler was more commonly engaged by the wealthy. He was usually a grandSpan>, authoritarian figure, commandSpan>ing respect andSpan> awe andSpan> most of the servants would have been scared to death of upsetting him! He was dressed like a gentleman of the period andSpan> generally ran the household...

Like Father Like Sons #20

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SONS As mentioned before my dad used to be a racing driver during the 1950s andSpan> ran his own team in the 1960s, travelling all over Europe in his trusty Volkswagon van with his two mechanics andSpan> driver. He didn’t have big sponsorship money behind him andSpan> most of it was done on a shoestring but he came back with lots of funny stories of their van breaking down or some rural ‘HotelSpan>’ that they had stayed in. From each country that he visited he always brought me back a doll dressed in the traditional costume of that country. There was quite a collection andSpan> I still have them; I used to put them on display in the Library when our...

Anyone for Tennis? #96

With the summer season well andSpan> truly upon us andSpan> Wimbledon almost here, I thought a blog about tennis might be in order! The game of tennis first started in the Mediaeval days andSpan> involved hitting a ball with a bare handSpan> andSpan> later with a glove. By the 16th century the glove had become a racquet andSpan> the game had moved to an enclosed playing area andSpan> the rules had stabilized. This was known as ‘real tennis’. The word tennis came into use in English in the mid-14th century from French, via the Anglo-Norman term Tenez, which can be translated as 'hold', 'receive' or 'take', a call from the server to his opponent indicating that he is about to serve....

Posted by Viv Wilson on 19th February 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell Ingram,Temple Newsam, history,Jacobean, hugo meynell, keeping up with the aristocrats,Downton Abbey
Hoar Cross Hall was built by Hugo andSpan> Emily Meynell Ingram in 1871 andSpan> this week I am delving into the family background of Hugo to explain how Emily came to own the Temple Newsam estate after his death. In 1782, Hugo's grandSpan>father, Hugo Meynell of Quorndon, the 'father of fox hunting', married the Hon. Elizabeth Ingram Shepheard. She was the daughter of Charles Ingram, 9th Viscount Irwin andSpan> Lord Ingram. The family seat was Temple Newsam in Yorkshire andSpan> this was how the Meynell family became associated with this great house. Through this marriage of Hugo andSpan> Elizabeth, the Meynell family also inherited the Ingram estates in Lincolnshire, acquired by Sir...

...This month I start a brandSpan> new series on stately homes local to Hoar Cross Hall andSpan> the first one is Blithfield Hall, which was probably the nearest stately home neighbour to Hoar Cross Hall andSpan> had been privately owned by the Bagot family since the 14th century. The house, which is Grade I listed, is situated between Rugeley andSpan> Abbots Bromley andSpan> is about 6 miles from the Hall. I remember calling round with my parents once to see Nancy, Lady Bagot, andSpan> admiring the goats they had roaming around the nearby fields. Blithfield Hall is known as the home of a breed of goat, the Bagot goat, which for several hundred years have lived semi-wild on the estate....
