After leaving school I spent a year at Burton-on-Trent Technical College studying to be a secretary but my year at college had come to an end - now to find a job! Most stately homes have the obligatory hunting, shooting and fishing and Hoar Cross Hall was no exception during the meynell family’s time there. We didn't participate in any of these but, however, the meynell and South Staffs Hunt used to meet locally to do a spot of fox hunting. they would all gather at different venues around the area and enjoy a drink before setting off. PANTO PRANKS!     During the 1970s Hoar Cross Hall was used from time to time for local community activities and one such event was the production in 1978 of a traditional pantomime, ‘Midnight and a Journey back to Happiness’. It was written by local people, Robert Leighton from Yoxall and the Hon. Alexandra meynell, daughter-in-law of Mrs Jean meynell whom we had purchased the Hall from. the words and music were written by local songwriter, David Matthews, who had written songs for quite a few pop artists during the 1960s, his most famous being Matt Munro’s ‘We’re gonna change the world’.
