ARISTOCRATIC TRAVELS: Emily Charlotte Meynell, the original owner of Hoar Cross hall, was probably one of the wealthiest independent women of the late 19th century in Britain. Her property included country estates around the Midlands, a London house in Eaton Square and a villa in Florence. For many years she owned a yacht, the latter a fully-crewed schooner of 380 tons. The family had large financial resources in addition to their estate income, through which they were sustained until well into the 20th century.

...Cristal Challenge National. He also drove Gavin’s Reynard FF2000 at Donington Park for a few laps to get the feel of a racing car and to see if his future lay there. Nowadays he’s more interested in the two wheel variety, regularly travelling around Europe riding along the French mountain trails!

...More photos from the album of Queen Alexandra in the run up to the Coronation showing members of the royal family at leisure in the early part of the 20th century. Alexandra enjoyed photography as a hobby and in 1908 put together an album of her personal photos to be sold for charity. In it are photos of her husband King Edward VII and other royals spending time at Balmoral and Sandringham during their holidays – a rare insight into how the royal family spent their leisure time, which in those days would never have been seen before.

...RACING TRAVELS: During the 1960s my dad travelled all over Europe with his racing team. The header photo shows him with his VW van with his racing car on the back. He usually took two mechanics with him who were friends of his who just loved racing and volunteered their services for a free holiday abroad! He went to all the big racing circuits: Hockenheim, Nurburgring and Monza, travelling across Europe to get to them. He always came back with lots of funny stories to tell. Because the van he used wasn't brand new it would sometimes break down but at least he had two mechanics with him - however, getting parts wasn't easy in the 1960s, especially...

...it was a challenging day but at least all our Christmas presents were still in the house and my dad, Gavin and I had a (fairly) nice dinner finished off with a good dose of the Morecambe and Wise Show to put a smile on our faces!
