The Grand Opening #5

And so we move into 1971 and the preparation of Hoar Cross hall so we could open it to the public by Easter. During the run up to buying the house my dad had been buying furniture, carpets and paintings like crazy and I remember our previous home being jam packed with chaise longues, sideboards and carved chests as well as all the suits of armour that he already had. This furniture was now set out in all the rooms. My mum’s collection of Victorian costumes were on display in the Ballroom as well as my dad’s collection of silver plated ‘display’ armour, which hung around the panelled walls; the suits of armour and the many paintings they had lined the Lon...

Huntin', Shootin' and Fishin' #6

Posted by Viv Wilson on 4th May 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell, fox hunting, shooting, fishing, fox, hounds,Henry VIII,gun,Bridgerton,Downton Abbey, keeping up with the aristocrats
Most stately homes have the obligatory hunting, shooting and fishing and Hoar Cross hall was no exception during the Meynell family’s time there. We didn't participate in any of these but, however, the Meynell and South Staffs Hunt used to meet locally to do a spot of fox hunting. They would all gather at different venues around the area and enjoy a drink before setting off. One of their usual places was the Meynell Ingram Arms Public House at the bottom of the village. In February 1972 they had their ‘meet’ at the hall. We, as the host family, got all dressed up to meet and greet them and local helpers served drinks, usually sherry. I had no interest in h...

My parents’ court case was finally over and my dad had six months to leave the family home, Hoar Cross hall. In the meantime my mum had to find the funds to buy him out and he had to find another house to live in. He also had an awful lot of stuff to move too! He eventually found a house in nearby Burton-on-Trent but as it was obviously a lot smaller he had to get rid of a lot of his possessions and one of the first things to go was his Lotus Elite. He advertised it in the local paper but instead of getting a phone call from a likely buyer, the first call was from the local tax office. Back in those days they used to check advertisements in the newspapers and...

What the Butler Saw! #42

Posted by Viv Wilson on 17th February 2023 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell, downton abbey,Carson the butler,London, servants ball, footmen, champagne,Diamond wedding, mailbag, dance,The Crown
Anyone who’s seen Downton Abbey will remember Carson the butler. He is exactly how a butler would have been in the 19th century, a grand, authoritarian figure, commanding respect and awe and most of the servants would have been scared to death of upsetting him! He was dressed like a gentleman of the period and generally ran the household with an iron fist. Although most big houses had a house steward who was in charge of accounts and general running of the household, a butler was more commonly engaged by the wealthy. They usually started as footmen and worked their way up fro there.  Most butlers stayed at the same household until they retired and probably...

Hoar Cross hall - Life below stairs #45

Posted by Viv Wilson on 10th March 2023 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell, first world war, second world war, chapel,Lady Dorothy,Downton Abbey, upstairs downstairs,The Crown,Amazon,my dad bought a mansion
This week I’ve done a history blog about the servants who lived at the hall from the 1870s to the 1950s when the hall became empty. They were an essential part of keeping a big house running but were often not appreciated by the aristocracy as they went about their day to day duties. The life of a servant in Victorian times was a hard one. They had to rise at 5am to clean and light all the fires and dust and polish the floors, then do a day’s work, often not getting to bed much before midnight. No wonder they didn’t live to a great age in those days! By the end of the 19th century there were nearly one and a half million servants; most young girls went in...

Queen Alexandra - my family #50

Posted by Viv Wilson on 13th April 2023 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,hoar cross hall spa,Meynell,Queen Alexandra,Queen Mary,King of Denmark,King charles,Coronation,King George V,King Edward VII,Downton Abbey,The Crown,Royal Family,queen victoria,Sandringham,Queen elizabeth,Balmoral
Queen Alexandra was the daughter-in-law of Queen Victoria as she was married to her eldest son and heir, Edward VII. Her family were from Denmark and although of royal blood they were a distant branch of the royal house of Oldenburg and apparently lived very modestly on her father's army commission. However, in 1852 her father, Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg, was chosen to succeed his second cousin Frederick VII as King of Denmark thus the family's status rose and they moved into a new official residence, Bernstorff Palace. Alexandra, or 'Alix' as she was known was born on 1st December 1844, her full name being Alexandra Caroline M...
