...near the basement door.   We quickly hid the bike in one of the outbuildings and ran into the house in the dark (something I was not too keen on!).  As we went up the spiral staircase to the ground floor and looked out of the window, to our amusement we could see the car driving round and round in the woods, its headlights lighting up the night sky!  They won’t do that again in a hurry, we thought!  Later on, when the car had eventually found its way out of the woods, Kev decided to go home.  I walked to the front door with him and as I said goodnight I saw a man standing behind him.  I asked Kev who he was (as if he’d know!) but when he turned roun...

When Kev saw the organ in pieces he offered to try and fix it and we spent many an hour in the chapel and basement trying to work out which pipe went where and how to make it play again.  But it was quite complicated and it was an ongoing project for some time – still, it kept us busy! The divorce was getting quite bad by now and I had to accompany my dad to the solicitors on more than one occasion, mainly for moral support but also to back up what was happening in the house between my parents as I witnessed quite a lot of arguments and fights.  The so...

...acy. The basement rooms were where most of the staff spent much of their time. The large kitchen with its open fireplace was the main cooking area with the scullery nearby along with larders for meat, game, fish and dairy products. The cook’s own sitting room was also near to the kitchen. Across the passageway from the kitchen was the Servants Hall (where they all ate their meals) and along the passage was the butler’s pantry and plate room and the butler’s bedroom. The plate room was where all the silver plate was kept and it was the butler’s job to look after it, even having his bedroom next to the plate room so it was always under guard, especially a...
