Hoar Cross Hall - Life below stairs #19

Posted by Viv Wilson on 13th September 2021 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross Hall,Meynell,Victorian, servants, first world war,Downton Abbey,Bridgerton,The Crown, gentry, pheasants
This week I’ve done a historical blog about the servants who lived at the Hall from the 1870s to the 1950s when the Hall became empty. They were an essential part of keeping a big house running but were often not appreciated by the aristocracy as they went about their day to day duties. The life of a servant in Victorian times was a hard one. They had to rise at 5am to clean and light all the fires and dust and polish the floors, then do a day’s work, often not getting to bed much before midnight. No wonder they didn’t live to a great age in those days! By the end of the 19th century there were nearly one and a half million servants; most young girls went...

What the Butler Saw! #37

Posted by Viv Wilson on 31st January 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross Hall,Meynell,Downton Abbey, butler, footman,Christmas
Anyone who’s seen Downton Abbey will remember Carter the butler. He is exactly how a butler would have been in the 19th century and, strangely enough, the butler at Hoar Cross Hall during the early part of the 20th century was also called Carter! Although most big houses had a house steward who was in charge of accounts and general running of the househOld, a butler was more commonly engaged by the wealthy. He was usually a grand, authoritarian figure, commanding respect and awe and most of the servants would have been scared to death of upsetting him! He was dressed like a gentleman of the period and generally ran the househOld with an iron fist. As I said,...

An Edwardian Schoolroom Maid #40

Posted by Viv Wilson on 4th February 2023 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross Hall,Meynell, earl and countess of lichfield, schoolroom, governess, earl and countess of bradford, skegness, spanish
For the first 75 years of Hoar Cross Hall’s history about 50 servants were employed by the Meynell family in the house and grounds. Among these was a young girl of fifteen who started work in 1920 as a Schoolroom Maid. Her name was Miss Inez Sophia Large and she had connections to Hoar Cross through her grand-parents, William and Mary Tooth, who lived in the village where William was the blacksmith; his smithy was just along from the Meynell public house. He had worked on the ironwork of the Hall during its construction in the 1860s. Inez’s aunt, Constance Madeley, was the wife of the landlord at the Buffalo Inn, in nearby Newborough, and it was through her...

Hallowe'en Hauntings #100

Going to sleep in a big Old house is quite scary when you’re young but going to sleep in a big Old house that’s haunted is even more scary!!  As we approach Hallowe'en my mind has gone back to that first winter at Hoar Cross Hall and all the scary things that happened - and that was without any trick or treaters in those days!  We quickly realised that we weren’t the only inhabitants of the house when we moved there in the 1970s.  Every time there was a windy night I could hear a window banging in the attic – all night long it kept me awake.  The next day I would go upstairs to the attics to close it but there would be no windows open or even loose.Â...

Moving Day Arrives #2

Posted by Viv Wilson on 6th April 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | Hoar Cross Hall,Meynell,Victorian,Chester Zoo,ghost,Bridgerton, keeping up with the aristocrats,Downton Abbey, pumping station
My parents took vacant possession of Hoar Cross Hall in 1970 and the whole process of moving house was done over the summer months. We lived about 20 miles away in an Old vicarage with a large garden and lots of outbuildings. This house was about 200 years Old and they say Bonnie Prince Charlie marched past it on his way to battle back in the day, for all you history buffs out there! Actually I love history and I think my interest was fuelled by living in these historic houses as a child. My dad used to be a racing driver in the 1950s and before that he did motorcycle racing, often at nearby Donnington Park. During the 1960s he ran his own team, Shardlow Motor R...

Skools out for summer #13

Posted by Viv Wilson on 26th July 2021 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross Hall,Meynell,Greece,Spain,Portugal,Caves of drach,Victorian,Library, camels, bullfight,Bridgerton,Downton Abbey
When Hugo and Emily Meynell built Hoar Cross Hall it included a whole estate with it, namely kitchen gardens, greenhouses, stables, a farm and cottages. Old Hall (their original home) was also on the estate and was accessed via a private road, which ran from the main road. By the time the seventies came along the stable block and Old Hall were private houses and another part of Old Hall had been made into a children’s home. Emily Meynell had started this home in the Victorian days, calling it ‘The Home of the Good Shepherd’ but it was for boys only at that time. When we were there it was a mixed home and run by a husband and wife couple. They used to have...
