...off their party poppers. My brother Gavin’s birthday was New Year’s Day so he was allowed to come down just before midnight and everyone would sing Happy Birthday to him.  Not many youngsters of that age had 500 people singing birthday wishes to them and a huge party in their house! Don’t miss next week’s instalment:  Skool’s out for summer! If you would like to follow my story from the beginning, click here and please feel free to share with your friends.    ...

...ited to a party held for them in the Long Gallery. They were restricted to this area only, whenever there was a party or Servants Ball – well, you couldn’t have the servants peeking into the family’s private rooms could you? Although they must have been curious to see them! Other outdoor staff included the chauffeur who had been employed for many years by the Meynell family. They had owned a motor car since the very early years of the century and many more cars were owned subsequently. Mrs Ellen Fisher, widow of the then chauffeur, Albert, recalled how a Maudsley was delivered just after the First World War. This would have cost around £200, nearly four...

...all for a party c 1974   On another occasion someone hired the Hall for a ‘Gentleman’s Evening’ – well, you can imagine what that entailed! Obviously we children weren’t around for this but I understand there were ladies who provocatively removed their clothes (!), an entertainer, a singer and a bar – I’m sure a good time was had by all, if that’s what floats your boat! The Staffordshire Building Society also featured the Hall on one of their calendars – we were the January picture and it showed the driveway and entrance to the Hall covered in an inch of snow – very seasonal and pretty but as previously mentioned, very cold indoors and...

...ed a good party and he wouldn’t want to spoil their night out! It was like something out of a black comedy or Fawlty Towers, carrying a body down the gallery, hoping no-one would notice – fortunately nobody did notice as they thought it was somebody being helped outside that had had too much to drink! As December approached the banquets were twice a week and the guests were more lively as they got into the Christmas spirit. More people dressed up in mediaeval gear and once I walked down the Long Gallery to see a ‘monk’ with his robe up round his waist warming his bottom in front of the fire! But it wasn’t just the guests who had too much to drink –...

...ever, the party was great and the band a huge success. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and drank the bar dry. My dad brought down the promised bottles of champagne that he had been saving for all those years and put them on our table. After a while he noticed that everyone was happily drinking the cheaper pomagne, which we had bought for the toast, so he took all the bottles back upstairs to his room! We didn’t even get one for ourselves! Later on we had the speeches and, as I have said before, our best man was in the entertainment industry and was a professional performing magician. As he did his speech, he incorporated some of his tricks into the tal...
