With the King's Coronation looming on 6th May in the UK, I thought I'd do some royal family related articles this month starting with royal visitors at the Hall in the 1920s. I also have a book called Queen Alexandra's Christmas Gift Book which was left in the Library and shows personal photos from her own camera which she took of the royal family between 1900-1910 - a rare insight indeed into what the royals did in their leisure time! I will be sharing these photos over the next month leading up to the Coronation and hope you find them as fascinating as I do.

Her reign has covered seven decades, this being her Platinum Jubilee. She also celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977, her Golden Jubilee in 2002 and her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. During her Coronation 27 million people watched it on TV and another 11 million listened on the radio in the days when not many people had a TV. I can imagine lots of front rooms crammed with neighbours eager to see the new Queen or even watching the TVs in shop windows (yes, this really did happen!)

Royal Heirs
This photo is probably taken around 1905 on board the 'Victoria and Albert' yacht as the royal family did a lot of their travelling on this. It shows Queen Alexandra's husband, King Edward VII with their son George (later George V) and his two eldest sons, David and Albert (later to become King Edward VIII who abdicated and King George VI, the Queen's father). ...More photos from the album of Queen Alexandra in the run up to the Coronation showing members of the royal family at leisure in the early part of the 20th century. Alexandra enjoyed photography as a hobby and in 1908 put together an album of her personal photos to be sold for charity. In it are photos of her husband King Edward VII and other royals spending time at Balmoral and Sandringham during their holidays – a rare insight into how the royal family spent their leisure time, which in those days would never have been seen before.

...Here is a final selection of photos from the album of Queen Alexandra, found in the Library of Hoar Cross Hall. Alexandra enjoyed photography as a hobby and in 1908 put together this album of personal photos of her family to be sold for charity. It is a fascinating insight into another world, long gone now. As we lead up to the Coronation of King Charles III it is a reminder of all that has gone before and all that is to come in the future with our hard working royals.
