Country houses are to be found throughout the British Isles and are a peculiarly English phenomenon. Houses range from mediaeval manor houses to classical Palladian mansions, elegant Georgian residences to the Gothic buildings of the Victorian era. A great many have survived for two main reasons: Britain has been spared much of the havoc of war and revolution affecting other countries. This lovely Grade II listed Georgian house in South Yorkshire was once the childhood home of The Honourable Emily Charlotte Meynell who married Hugo Meynell of Hoar Cross and who, together with Hugo, built Hoar Cross Hall to be their family home in 1873, a hundred years before my family lived there.  The original house was called Hickleton Palace and had been built for Judge Francis Rodes in the 16th century but in 1745 Hickleton Hall was built just to the south of this house after the estate was bought by Godfrey Wentworth in about 1730. The Dining Room   Sadly, in 1945, the Hall was sold by the 5th Baron Bagot to the South Staffordshire Waterworks Company, as they planned to build a reservoir which was completed in 1953 and opened by the Queen Mother. The reservoir is 14 metres deep and approx. 4km long and took 500 men six years to build.  It was made in a shallow valley through which the River Blithe ran and has a causeway across it. It is now classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the over-wintering wildfowl that reside there.
