...oing into Uttoxeter every day meant I could buy cigarettes for 30p a pack and smoke them on the way home.  I often went up to our attic room to do my homework and write stories but also to have a crafty fag (cigarette for those in the US!).  I had also started to help myself to the odd bottle of mead from the banquet stock and kept it hidden in the attic – all typical teenage stuff! One day, whilst walking round Uttoxeter at lunchtime, I saw a newspaper board telling everyone about a streaker that had run through the town the day before – what was this?  A man running naked for the fun of it?  On further investigation I found that this was the latest cr...

...BECOMING A ROCK CHICK:  My schooldays were coming to an end now and I absolutely couldn’t wait to leave.  The school itself was an old Victorian grammar school which still had wooden desks with inkwells in them!  Even the teachers wore their mortar boards and gowns, not like the ones at Eton and Harrow – mine were more like the ones in the Beano!  However, in the last two years there I had made a few good friends and we would go into Uttoxeter every lunch time to meet up with a group of guys that worked at the local JCB firm.  They were all into motor bikes and one of the first films I watched was ‘Easy Rider’.  They also went to a lot of concerts...

...in nearby Uttoxeter – well I say nearby but it was actually about 10 miles away and I had to catch a double decker bus to get there. At least the school bus hadn’t been cancelled! My brother went to the local primary school down the hill from our house. As the winter drew nearer it got incredibly cold in the house as the old Victorian heating system had long since broken down and our evenings were spent huddled together in one room with an electric fire to keep us warm. Oh, how I laughed at all my school friends who thought we lived in the lap of luxury with servants waiting on us hand and foot just because we lived in a stately home – if only they knew th...
