...being Sir Winston Churchill who helped her enormously when she first became Queen whilst she was still getting over the loss of her father. Her grandmother Queen Mary must have been a huge help to her in those early days with advice and support although she too sadly died in March 1953 before seeing her grand-daughter crowned.
In 2015 the Queen was declared the longest reigning monarch on the throne and now in the world, always supported by her husband of 73 years, Philip until his death last year.

The political power exerted by owners and their association with music and the arts are all part of the contribution these country seats have made to our society. However, as their decline came towards the end of the 19th century different uses came to the fore in the 20th century as these great houses were opened to the public and saved by institutions such as The National Trust.
