...ously not afford to do. Every night they were cleaned and put in a special ‘glove box’ which was very ornate but also perfumed to mask any odours.
Gloves were considered a very private accessory as it covered what was considered an intimate part of a woman’s body – those “perfect hands”! So next time you leave home without your gloves, remember what a scandal that would have been if you’d lived 150 years ago!

...land in Staffordshire since at least the 11th century. The first Baron, Hervey Bagot, was created a baronet of Blithfield Hall in 1627 for his part in the Civil War – he was also High Sheriff of Staffordshire. His son, grandson and great grandson also represented Staffordshire in the House of Commons.
The Hall, with its embattled towers and walls is mainly Elizabethan and was originally a fortress complete with moat but in the 1820s a Gothic façade was added by the designer John Buckler, it is thought.
