THE GRAND OPENING #5

...in a long ball-gown – usually a friend from school was asked to come along and stay over to keep me company.  I always found them very exciting and loved that moment when we were all dressed up waiting for people to arrive, the house all clean and polished and fires lit (depending on the time of year).  The band would be setting up in the ballroom and the caterers would be putting the finishing touches to the tables.  As the evening commenced my friend and I would usually go round selling raffle tickets which would be drawn later on that night. A lot of the guests were middle aged and the men would always ask us girls to sit on their knee while they sorted...

...the many balls which we held there during the year, namely the annual ‘Red Cross ball’, the ‘Midsummer’s Eve ball’ and the ‘New Year’s Eve ball’ to name a few.  These were great fun, especially for me as I got to dress up in a long ballgown and stay up late! Dancing at the New Year's Eve ball   In time we also ran Mediaeval Banquets and this room was filled with over 200 people on a Friday and Saturday night enjoying broth, chicken and orange sorbet whilst being served ale and mead by comely wenches!  The entertainment, however, was not quite so refined as in the Meynell family’s day and I shudder to think what they might have made o...
