The main lawns at Hoar Cross were called the 'Italian Gardens' and are centred with a fountain on each side (see header picture) as are the lower gardens which are accessed through the Elizabethan gateway halfway down. This gateway was brought from Temple Newsam, another of Emily's inherited estates, along with other walls and gateways dotted around the grounds. ...es to the fountains but the pipes were rusted up so we left them alone.
However, in the garden which we used as our private garden, there was a little pond in the middle which was full of newts and we had hours of fun playing with them and making them ‘walk the plank’ which was just them jumping off a piece of wood into the water – no harm done, they loved it! Never did find out how they got there though!
Bats also featured strongly on the guest list of this mansion, although nothing to do with hunting, shooting or fishing! One summer there were over 30 bats whizzing around the house trying to find nests for their young. We had just had a burglar...Huntin', Shootin' and Fishin' #6
