...s between the tax man and my dad.  Of course, my dad was in his element thinking of more ways to get his revenge on my mum!  What better way than to shop her to the tax people.  He knew that she didn’t tell them exactly how many guests came to the banquets each week.  It was usually around 200-240 but I think she had been telling them 150.  She always did the book-keeping at home and I don’t think her figures were always ‘accurate’ – well, who likes paying  tax?  My dad was happy to tell them that my mum always did the book-keeping as he was useless at that sort of thing and so he feigned ignorance! ...NEW YEAR JINKS the New Year’s Eve Balls were usually the highlight of the year.  After twelve months of hard work, especially running the Mediaeval Banquets twice a week through the winter, we were always ready to see out the year in style with a big new year party.  In those days it was always black tie for the men and long dresses for the ladies – usually around 500 people bought tickets for an evening of entertainment with a dance band, disco and a meal.  At midnight a man dressed in traditional Scottish regalia, including a kilt, would pipe in the new year with his bagpipes.  Down the Long Gallery he would slowly walk and into the Ballroom  with hi...
