Ghostbusters! #7

...d to do a story on our resident ghost. They turned up, coincidentally, the day after I’d heard more noises in the night. I have always kept a diary and this particular night tells me that I couldn’t sleep and was sitting in bed reading at about 1am when I suddenly heard a young girl crying – not for the first time either. I told the press men all about it and about the other noises we’d heard in the attic and they took some photos of us three children peeping round my bedroom door and one of me on the stairs where the ghost always appeared. We toured the attics with them and they took a few more pictures, then down to the basement which always looked so...

Race Day Parties! #25

Posted by Viv Wilson on 30th October 2021 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell,motor racing,motor bike,Bob Gerrard,Tom Wheatcroft,champagne,parties,Lotus Elite,racing cars,VIPS
...y similar story to the Donington Park one actually! The official opening was in 1956 with Bob Gerrard being in the first race. My dad would have been there racing his car too throughout the 1950s alongside great names such as Graham Hill and Jim Clarke. So it seemed appropriate that his ex-driver should buy the track that he used to race around! The official programme in 1977   Chris decided to hold a party there when he re-opened it and so we all went along to celebrate. It was similar to the Donington party with lots of different races and marquees full of free food and drink! They went on all day and my friend Janine came along to join in the fun. We...

Hoar Cross Hall - Life Below Stairs #35

Posted by Viv Wilson on 9th January 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | Hoar Cross Hall,Meynell,Victorian,19th century, servants,Bridgerton,Downton Abbey, gardeners world
...This week I’ve done a history blog about the servants who lived at Hoar Cross Hall from the 1870s to the 1950s when the Hall became empty. They were an essential part of keeping a big house running but were often not appreciated by the aristocracy as they went about their day to day duties. The life of a servant in Victorian times was a hard one. They had to rise at 5am to clean and light all the fires and dust and polish the floors, then do a day’s work, often not getting to bed much before midnight. No wonder they didn’t live to a great age in those days! By the end of the 19th century there were nearly one and a half million servants; most young girls...

The Kitchen Maid's story #36

...rature, history, philosophy, and drama. She graduated in 1984. In 1991, she paid a visit to Hoar Cross, spending a pleasurable week as a guest in the Spa Hotel, above stairs! What a strange experience that must have been for her, albeit enjoyable! Her life had now come full circle which just goes to show that you should never give up on your dreams and you’re never too old to do something new!   Don’t miss next week’s instalment:   'What the Butler Saw!'   If you would like to follow my story from the beginning, click here and please feel free to share with your friends.
