...uring the summer a friend of the children, Mary Heath, stayed at the hall and this is the little girl believed to be his inspiration for Alice. But also, the room in which he taught the children had a lovely mirror over the mantlepiece which is exactly the same as the picture of the mirror in his story ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’. So it seems that lots of things from that time inspired him!

...s was the summer residence of the King of Greece; it was also the birthplace of Prince Philip, who was born on the dining room table!
Since 2001 it has housed the 'Museum of Palaiopolos – Mon Repos' and lies in the forest of Palaiopolos south of Corfu City.

The Palace was originally built for the Foreign Minister, Count Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff and completed in May 1765. However, Bernstorff left Denmark in 1770 after being dismissed by the regent, Johann Friedrich Struensee. It was designed by the French architect Nicolas-Henri Jardin and remained in the Bernstorff family until 1812. In 1842 it was bought by Queen Alexandra's grandfather, Christian VIII and then inherited by her father. The game of tennis first started in the Mediaeval days and involved hitting a ball with a bare hand and later with a glove. ...The next house in this series is a mere half hour from Hoar Cross Hall and we often visited it during the summer months and later, when my children were born, we’d take them for a visit too! Seated on the edge of Cannock Chase this elegant house was once a manor house owned by the Bishops of Lichfield, until the dissolution of the monasteries around 1540. Later it came into the hands of the Anson family, who were ancestors of the Earls of Lichfield, and stayed there for three centuries.
