Hoar Cross Hall - Life below stairs #19

Posted by Viv Wilson on 13th September 2021 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell,Victorian, servants, first world war,Downton Abbey,Bridgerton,The Crown, gentry, pheasants
...This week I’ve done a historical blog about the servants who lived at the Hall from the 1870s to the 1950s when the Hall became empty. They were an essential part of keeping a big house running but were often not appreciated by the aristocracy as they went about their day to day duties. The life of a servant in Victorian times was a hard one. They had to rise at 5am to clean and light all the fires and dust and polish the floors, then do a day’s work, often not getting to bed much before midnight. No wonder they didn’t live to a great age in those days! By the end of the 19th century there were nearly one and a half million servants; most young girls went...

...week’s blog, we started our own business which ran for a few years then he went into selling and eventually into the music business, starting his own recording studio in the 1980s. This studio moved to Leicester in the 1990s and then we went on to buying a live music venue in Leicester City Centre. Kev was also involved with running the annual Abbey Park Festival in Leicester where we had our own stage for the bands who played at our club. He was also involved in band management and most of our lives have revolved around music related events and festivals, among other things. After starting a family we moved to a village in Leicestershire. When I became preg...

A Home fit for a King #21

...In this week's blog I am focusing on the royal family again and the stately homes which they grew up in. The main residence for the Royal family is Buckingham Palace which is the administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United Kingdom and where many state occasions take place, but Buckingham Palace was originally known as Buckingham House. The building at the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site that had been in private ownership for at least 150 years. It was acquired by King George III in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte and became known as The Queen's House. During the 19th ce...

...Hoar Cross was part of Needwood Forest, the 11th century lands of Henry de Ferrers. The land was passed down to Henry’s son and subsequent various people over the course of 500 years ending with the Webb family, around the 1730s, who bought the land and house known as the Manor of the Cross. This was quite a large house built on a hill near Yoxall (which is the village next to Hoar Cross). In 1740 the manor house was demolished and later the Hon. Charles Talbot bought the estate for £17,000. Eventually it was sold to Hugo Meynell, who already owned huge amounts of property all over the county and was now about to add another one to his portfolio. This branch...
