...eries and ghosts but when you actually live in one in real life, it’s a bit different!  The spooky attic   The first few years at Hoar Cross Hall were the worst ones for spiritual activity - maybe we'd disturbed the ghosts who were used to an empty house and not one with children running about everywhere!   Our family consisted of my mother, father and two younger brothers; my parents being members of the Historical Society were keen to buy a house to show my dad's huge arms and armour collection along with many antiques.  But we hadn't bargained with the house being haunted!  My mum was often woken up by the sight of a little girl ‘floating’...

More Tea Vicar? #12

...ns of our ghost was buried – the small child whose cries we often heard.  She was buried in the churchyard and we had found her grave after hearing the noises and stories about her.  I think she was about 9 years old. My mum at the grave of the girl whose ghost haunt's the Hall Because we lived at the Hall the vicar expected to see us at church every week; however, weekends were our busy time so we didn’t go every week but managed to attend at Easter and Christmas.  I have to say we were non too keen on going to church as we had to be on our best behaviour (something which didn’t sit easily with us as you’ve probably guessed!).  Afterwards...

Things that go bump in the night #3

...eries and ghosts but when you’re actually in the middle of it in real life, it’s a bit different! My parents also heard noises from their bedroom. It sounded like a room full of people talking, like at a party. They couldn’t work out if it was birds nesting under the eaves so they slept in another room down the corridor to see if they still heard it – and sure enough, they did! What was going on? Had we disturbed some lost souls forever wandering in the attics? The haunted attic corridor   One night my mum was woken up by the sight of a little girl ‘floating’ over the bed. She said the girl was wearing a long nightdress and mop cap and seeme...

Alice - the ghost in the mirror #28

...that the ghost of Alice may have come with the mirror. Ever since the mirror was installed in the Library people have seen a little girl running around the house. There is also a bedroom upstairs called ‘The Alice room’ where guests have heard a child knocking on the door and running away! The Mad Hatter looking for Alice   One evening a barman working in the Library looked into the mirror and saw a little girl standing behind him in the secret doorway. When he turned around she was gone. He went over to the doorway and looked through it into the next room but she was nowhere to be seen. He assumed that she was a guest at the hotel and thought nothi...

Midnight pool parties #22

...we had a ghost at each end of the house.  What a night! We were now spending more of our social time in the Meynell Arms, the local pub.  Every time we went in everybody wanted an update on what was going on at the Hall with my parents and their quabbles.   It was a bit like a local soap opera!   We had also become engaged and I stayed at Kev’s house in the week so I could get to work easily having failed my driving test a couple of times; weekends were spent at the Hall.   Hoar Cross and the surrounding villages were a bit of a Birmingham commuter belt area and a lot of the families were quite well-to-do.  We met up with a crowd of young people in...

Christmas High Jinks! #29

Posted by Viv Wilson on 27th December 2020 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | hoar cross hall,Meynell, new years eve, midsummer's eve,grave,candles,verger,bell-ringers,carol service
...t’s the ghost!” she cried. “The little girl we keep seeing on the landing.” “Urgh really?” queried Gavin, moving further away from the grave. “It must be”, continued Viv. “She’s the same age, she’s a Meynell and she died in the Victorian days.” Viv stood up triumphantly as she realised that this must be the child’s last resting place. Then she felt a bit sad as she thought of a child dying so young; it also made the whole ghost thing seem more of a reality now that they’d seen her grave. Dusk was starting to fall so they made their way back through the graveyard to the iron gate which led into their grounds and soon they were back...
