...rs on the Laughton estate, Winteringham Dook (now there's an unusual name!) The Laughton Estate was in Lincolnshire and also owned by the Meynells - they often stayed there in the Shooting Lodge instead of at the Hall, as it was smaller to run and helped keep costs down.

As ducks were early risers Jenny had to start cooking at around 3am to get breakfast ready for 4am before shooting began. Colonel Meynell appeared pleased with her efforts and she was rewarded with £1 on her 21st birthday – a lot of money in those days!
On her return to the Hall she found that a new temporary cook had started. For the next four months her days were dominated by nagging and persecution, aided and abetted by the butler who joined in the game of baiting her. Cooks like this...The Kitchen Maid's Tale #41

My dad had a gun licence and kept his gun in the bedroom in case any intruders tried to break in. One day Gavin and I found it when we had our friends round and took it to one of the empty bedrooms down the corridor. We were happily playing a game with it, pretending we were soldiers, when I decided to point it at the wall and pull the trigger.
