...d Grey in Scotland. During one of these visits to Scotland the couple stayed at Glamis Castle where a little party piece was put on for them and other guests present. This was a minuet performed by ten-year-old Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and her older brother David. That little girl would become the future Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Co-incidentally Lady Mary's sister Annie had married Frank Bowes-Lyon in 1883 and Lady Elizabeth was to become their niece, the daughter of Frank's older brother. And so therein lies a link to the royal family from a family living at Hoar Cross Hall!

...If you were young, free and single – oh, and very well-to-do – the 1920s were the decade to be a part of. The upper classes had lots of time on their hands and enjoyed post-First World War delights such as the theatre and jazz clubs.
Not so for the lower classes, in particular a young girl who was to become the kitchen maid at Hoar Cross Hall in the 1920s. The ‘depression’ after the First World War brought stark poverty to her home and many like her. Her name was Jean Rennie, and she was extremely intelligent having won a scholarship to Glasgow University to study French and music. Wimbledon
Wimbledon itself is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and arguably the most famous. Since the first tournament 125 years ago in 1877, The Championships have been hosted by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London and take place over two weeks in late June – early July. Tennis became popular because of the waning interest in croquet and the Club decided to organise a tennis tournament to pay for the repair of its pony roller, used to maintain the lawns.
